Di seguito, un articolo che ho scritto per Confederex dal titolo “L’importanza del coaching nel contesto scuola: dal lavoro in classe ai PCTO”
Viviamo in un mondo in rapida evoluzione e pertanto, come educatori, abbiamo il dovere di dare ai nostri studenti le competenze che li aiuteranno ad avere successo, dapprima nel loro percorso di studi e poi nel mondo del lavoro. Ma essere uno studente di successo non ha a che fare solo con la conoscenza. Significa essere in grado di agire come cittadini responsabili e di comunicare in modo efficace, pensare in modo critico e creativo per trovare soluzioni e opportunità. Dobbiamo essere in grado, quindi, di sostenere i nostri studenti nello sviluppo delle Life Competencies come il team work, il problem solving, il critical thinking, utili per il loro percorso di vita. Ma come possiamo portare nella scuola queste competenze? Come possiamo aiutare i nostri studenti a praticarle? Come possiamo rendere i nostri studenti autonomi, motivati, curiosi, focalizzati? Le risposte a questi quesiti si trovano in due aree fondamentali della didattica:
- nella dinamica della classe e nel rapporto studente–insegnante;
- nelle opportunità che la scuola deve offrire non solo come luogo fisico nel quale apprendere nozioni ma come palestra di allenamento alla vita lavorativa e sociale.
Se vogliamo formare cittadini autonomi e responsabili della loro crescita, dobbiamo dare loro la possibilità di mettersi in discussione e di analizzare il loro percorso formativo e di apprendimento. Per fare ciò è necessario modificare la dinamica della classe e il ruolo del docente. Il docente deve potersi confrontare con gli studenti così come un coach si confronta con i suoi coachees. Proprio il coaching può giocare un ruolo fondamentale nel contesto scuola. Secondo il padre fondatore del coaching Sir John Whitmore, infatti, il coaching è un processo che mira a migliorare la performance. Serve a liberare il potenziale di ognuno di noi. Aiuta il coachee ad essere autonomo nell’apprendimento piuttosto che a ricevere soluzioni che accetta passivamente. Il docente, quindi, deve avere lo stesso tipo di approccio e guidare lo studente verso le risposte che egli stesso dovrà trovare. In questo nuovo rapporto, il docente deve essere in grado di far concentrare lo studente sul suo talento, di farlo focalizzare sulle sue potenzialità. Per fare ciò, anche l’organizzazione della lezione o del modulo di apprendimento deve modificarsi. Bisogna dare agli studenti il giusto tempo per riflettere su ciò che si è appreso, creando una routine che preveda l’analisi non solo degli argomenti trattati, ma delle ragioni per cui questi siano risultati più importanti di altri, di cosa abbiano significato per loro e per la loro crescita. Bisogna, inoltre, chiedere sempre il “perché” delle loro decisioni, associando ad esse l’emozione che queste hanno suscitato: è questo che renderà ciò che è stato imparato indimenticabile e aiuterà a capire le proprie priorità e i propri veri valori.
L’altra area da tenere in altissima considerazione è quella del PCTO, gioia e dolore della nostra scuola italiana. Per far sì che il PCTO abbia il suo giusto valore, bisogna rispettarne la sua vera natura. PCTO sta per Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e l’Orientamento. “Percorso” significa evoluzione, transizione; spostarsi dal posto in cui ci si trova per raggiungere una meta: è necessario, quindi, dare ai nostri ragazzi la possibilità di crescere, di imparare, lungo questo percorso. “Competenze trasversali” sono quelle abilità che servono per la vita e per l’affermazione nel mondo del lavoro: lavorare in squadra, saper collaborare, risolvere i problemi, imparare ad essere creativi. “Orientamento” significa aiutare i ragazzi a sperimentare quegli ambiti lavorativi sui quali si focalizzeranno in futuro. A questo proposito, mi piace riportare un’esperienza di PCTO appena conclusa nata da una convenzione tra Giga International House, la scuola di lingue che dirigo, e il liceo Regina Elena di Acireale (CT). Esperienza che ha visto il coinvolgimento di ben 50 ragazzi e ragazze. La mia funzione è stata, oltre a quella di titolare dell’azienda ospitante, quella di esperto esterno nello svolgimento del progetto. Ed è a questo proposito che vorrei far comprendere la funzione dell’azienda ospitante. L’azienda non è un parcheggio, ma un laboratorio di crescita e il luogo dove avviene quel percorso, quella transizione, di cui ho appena parlato. Lo studente, quindi, deve imparare e completare l’esperienza del PCTO con un bagaglio di conoscenze e di abilità che prima non aveva. Lasciare i giovani inattivi a osservare, o peggio ancora “sfruttarli” a fare piccoli lavoretti (fotocopie, distribuzione volantini), non ha alcun valore. Bisogna dare loro strumenti per comprendere il mondo del lavoro dall’interno mettendoci non solo le mani, come semplice manovalanza, ma il cuore, l’anima e la passione, confrontandosi con quello che l’azienda rappresenta: la missione e i processi di raggiungimento degli obiettivi.
Così, durante il PCTO che ho guidato, gli studenti hanno avuto modo di conoscere come lavora una scuola di lingue: come si creano i materiali didattici, cosa si deve tenere in considerazione quando si insegna (ad es. livello ed età dei partecipanti), come si organizza una lezione (tempi ed obiettivi). L’obiettivo del PCTO è stato scelto dai ragazzi stessi che hanno dato vita al progetto “Life Competencies in Action for the Sustainable Development Goals”. Gli studenti hanno creato giochi, storie, ricette per sviluppare la consapevolezza degli Obiettivi Sostenibili nei bambini. Il progetto è stato gestito esattamente come gestiremmo, nella nostra azienda, la creazione di una nuova idea progettuale. I ragazzi hanno imparato le basi e le fasi del project management: dalla nascita dell’idea, alla distribuzione dei ruoli, all’esecuzione, al monitoraggio e controllo, alla presentazione del progetto finito. I ragazzi hanno, quindi, lavorato in modalità “team”, rispettando ruoli, stabilendo regolamenti interni e responsabilità per la buona riuscita del lavoro di squadra. Ma soprattutto hanno avuto modo di gestire il loro team rispettando i loro talenti e le loro attitudini. Un’attività fondamentale da integrare durante un PCTO, è quella di dare la possibilità agli studenti di fermarsi e riflettere sulle loro performance: sia individuali che di gruppo. Durante il PCTO del Liceo Regina Elena, questo processo è stato suddiviso in tre parti: analisi del lavoro individuale o di squadra, esplicitazione delle evidenze delle prestazioni, riflessione sulle azioni da intraprendere per il miglioramento delle performance. I ragazzi hanno avuto inoltre la possibilità di incontrare esperti scelti ad hoc in base all’obiettivo del programma: Theresa Maggio, scrittrice e giornalista, e Julie Wallis, direttrice di The London School di Schio e creatrice di materiali didattici e formatrice docenti. Durante gli incontri con gli esperti i ragazzi hanno imparato le tecniche di scrittura creativa e le basi per la creazione di materiali didattici per i bambini.
Vorrei concludere con una testimonianza del docente responsabile del progetto PCTO, prof. Vincenzo Scudero: “Alcuni alunni erano preoccupati di dover lavorare in modo così impegnativo. Temevano che fosse solo tempo tolto al loro studio. Alla fine del percorso mi hanno ringraziato per quello che hanno vissuto. Si sono ricreduti e hanno capito quanto valore ci fosse in ciò che hai programmato”. Queste parole, insieme ai volti sorridenti degli studenti mi confermano che integrare le Life Competencies nella scuola è la chiave del successo dei nostri studenti e del nostro essere educatori.
