I’m honored to share with you the press release of the awarding ceremony of certificates to my “High Impact Teenage Leaders”.

On 19th October the inaugural awards ceremony was held for the first seven students graduating from the High Impact Teenage Leaders project. The successful graduates won a scholarship funded by the International House World Foundation. The event was hosted at the Giga International House language school, and attended by some local entrepreneurs.
The graduates were given the name “The Beanies”, a name that derived from a play on words from the “beans”, one activity they participated in during the project. The graduates were: Claudia Ginevra Lagona from the “Ettore Majorana” State Scientific Institute of San Giovanni La Punta. Mattia Lembo from the “Benedetto Radice” Higher Institute of Bronte. Edoardo Puglisi and Gaia Saccone from the “Emilio Greco” State Art School of Catania. Cristina Raciti from the “Regina Elena” state high school in Acireale. Miriam Luna Rostagno from the “F. De Sanctis “of Paternò and Vincenzo Giuseppe Russo from the Archimede Technical Institute of Catania.
The scholarship was aimed at the best fourth year students in state secondary schools in the province of Catania. It included participation in ‘Discovering the Leader in You’, a leadership course delivered in English by Palmina La Rosa, the school director and certified coach, at Giga International House. In addition to the course, the students were supported by the Giga IH teachers themselves, in the production of the final paper and carried out the CPSQ (Cambridge Personal Styles Questionnaire).
Before the ceremony, the graduates were interviewed by Salvo La Rosa and they expressed their enthusiasm about the experience. Each of them emphasized the usefulness of the practical activities, how it developed their self-esteem, teamwork skills and self-confidence.
The event was virtually attended by Lucy Horsefield, representing the International House World Foundation who expressed herself as follows: «We have all lived through difficult times in the last eighteen months and it is very important, therefore, to be here together and to look to the future. Gaia, Cristina, Claudia, Edoardo, Miriam, Matteo and Vincenzo are the prime examples of young people who have the potential to make a positive impact on the world.»
Marco Faldetta, representing the foundation and member of the awarding commission as well as Alfredo Carpi, the president of AISLi, the Italian Association of Language Schools, also participated remotely. Alfredo Carpi also commented on the boys’ achievement: «Seneca used to say “there is no favorable wind for the sailor who does not know where to go”. I would say that today you crown the beginning of your life journey, to understand who you are and what you would like to do. Congratulations on your academic performance which allowed you to undertake this training course which will surely be useful for the future».
The local entrepreneurs who financed the scholarships were also present for the event. Dr. Maria Stella Tarico from the Musumeci Optical Center and Dr. Palmina La Rosa who is the project financier, trainer and the owner/director of Giga International House.
«It was a pleasure and an honor for me to support these seven young people and I am happy to have contributed to their growth. I also thank all those who have made this magnificent initiative possible, which involved an important international organization, local businesses and local schools “, said Palmina La Rosa. She concluded by saying: ” This is not the end of the initiative, in fact we are already working hard to provide another course in the coming years».

Si è tenuta ieri, martedì 19 ottobre, presso i locali di Giga International House, la cerimonia di consegna dei certificati ai sette studenti che hanno partecipato al progetto High Impact Teenage Leaders per aver vinto una borsa di studio messa a disposizione da International House World Foundation e da alcuni imprenditori locali.
Protagonisti dell’evento sono stati i The Beanies, così si sono autonominati i ragazzi con un nome che deriva da un gioco di parole che ricorda i “fagioli” utilizzati in una delle attività svolte nel corso del progetto. Ecco chi sono: Claudia Ginevra Lagona dell’Istituto Scientifico Statale “Ettore Majorana” di San Giovanni La Punta; Mattia Lembo dell’Istituto Superiore “Benedetto Radice” di Bronte, Edoardo Puglisi e Gaia Saccone del Liceo Artistico Statale “Emilio Greco” di Catania; Cristina Raciti del Liceo Statale “Regina Elena” di Acireale, Miriam Luna Rostagno del Liceo Statale “F. De Sanctis” di Paternò e Vincenzo Giuseppe Russo dell’Istituto Tecnico Archimede di Catania.
La borsa di studio era rivolta ai migliori studenti del quarto anno di una scuola secondaria statale della provincia di Catania. Prevedeva la partecipazione al Discovering the Leader in You, il corso di leadership in lingua inglese di Giga International House tenuto da Palmina La Rosa, direttrice della scuola e coach certificato. Oltre al corso, gli studenti sono stati supportati, dagli stessi insegnanti di Giga IH, nella produzione di un elaborato finale e hanno svolto il CPSQ (Cambridge Personal Styles Questionnaire).
Prima della cerimonia i ragazzi sono stati intervistati da Salvo La Rosa e hanno avuto modo di esprimere tutto il loro entusiasmo per il percorso svolto. Ognuno di loro ha sottolineato l’utilità dell’esperienza vissuta riscontrando anche netti miglioramenti dal punto di vista dell’autostima, della capacità di lavorare in gruppo e della sicurezza in se stessi.
All’evento ha partecipato, collegata dal Regno Unito, Lucy Horsefield, in rappresentanza di International House World Foundation che così si è espressa: «Abbiamo tutti vissuto dei momenti difficili negli ultimi diciotto mesi ed è molto importante, quindi, essere qui insieme e guardare al futuro. Gaia, Cristina, Claudia, Edoardo, Miriam, Matteo e Vincenzo sono l’esempio lampante di giovani ragazzi che hanno il potenziale per dare un impatto positivo al mondo». A partecipare a distanza anche Marco Faldetta, per conto della fondazione e membro della commissione aggiudicatrice, e Alfredo Carpi, presidente di AISLi, Associazione Italiana Scuole di Lingue. Proprio Alfredo Carpi ha dedicato un pensiero ai ragazzi: «Seneca diceva “non esiste vento favorevole per il marinaio che non sa dove andare”. Direi che oggi coronate l’inizio del percorso di vita per capire chi siete e cosa vorreste fare. Complimenti per il vostro rendimento scolastico che vi ha permesso di poter intraprendere un percorso formativo che sicuramente vi potrà essere utile per il futuro». Erano presenti, inoltre, gli imprenditori locali che hanno finanziato le borse di studio: la Dott.ssa Maria Stella Tarico, il Centro Ottico Musumeci e la Dott.ssa Palmina La Rosa nella triplice veste di finanziatrice del progetto, trainer dei ragazzi e padrona di casa in quanto direttrice di Giga International House.
«È stato per me un piacere e un onore seguire da vicino il percorso di questi sette ragazzi e sono contenta di aver contribuito alla loro crescita. Ringrazio, inoltre, tutti coloro i quali hanno reso possibile questa magnifica iniziativa che ha visto coinvolte un’importante organizzazione internazionale, alcune imprese locali e le scuole del territorio» così si è espressa Palmina La Rosa, che ha poi concluso: «Posso già affermare che non finiremo qui e che stiamo già lavorando affinché il progetto possa essere riproposto nei prossimi anni».
